Through her study under artists whom she
admires, and her study of master impressionist painters of the past, Betsy has
developed her own style which has been called “romantic impressionism.”
Her first exposure to art was through her grandmother, who was a portrait
artist. After painting in watercolor for twenty-five years, Betsy was seduced by
the versatility of painting in oil.
Stevenson’s endeavors led to a life long dream to paint en plein air with a
group of artists in France. They were led by Andy Braitman and Stephanie
Wheeler, both nationally acclaimed artists and teachers. Once awakened, she
pursued further study with renowned artists Randall McKissick, Karen Hewitt
Hagan, Connie Winters, Dee Beard Dean and Kevin Macpherson. In 2008 she painted
and studied in Tuscany, Italy with Andy Braitman. In their own way, they have
each enhanced her skills and challenged her ability to see things differently as
an artist.
Painting from life or in the field is Betsy’s preference. She strives to capture
on canvas the passion, as seen through her eyes, of the color, “light play” and
mood of her subjects – whether it is a beautiful French landscape or a furry
smiling goat.
